The Peel Wine Region stretches between the coastal areas of Rockingham and 50km south of Mandurah, to inland to the Darling Scarp and shire of Waroona. Part of the Peel Wine Region was originally known as South West Coastal (although never formally recognised) and ran along the coast in the South West from north to Paul Conti Wines (now part of Swan Districts region) and South to Capel Vale (now part of Geographe). The spread of the region from coastal to inland means that the temperature range and soil type is quite different between each area. Wandering on average is the coldest place in the southern wine regions of Western Australia. Although on summer days the temperature often exceeds that of the Peel coastal area and Dwellingup area, the night and winter temperatures are considerably lower. Wandering also has the least amount of rainfall on average compared to the rest of the region with an annual average of 614.5ml* and Dwellingup has the highest average annual rainfall at 1249.1ml*. Soils range from limestone sands to granite clays. |

In 1973 the first Shiraz vines were planted, followed by Chenin Blanc and Zinfandel in 1976, and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979. Other varieties such as Chardonnay, Verdelho, Cabernet Franc and Merlot were planted in 1980. Additional Shiraz were planted in 1994 and in 2002 we added an extra hectare of Zinfandel, making the total area of land under vine 16 hectares. The Peel region, with it's closeness to the ocean, limestone soils and Mediterranean climate, is an ideal location for bringing out fruit intensity and adds great regional characteristics to the wine.

Senior winemaker Will Nairn has a passion for great wine, particularly Shiraz, and the
suitability of the area he farmed, for growing grape vines made way for the
beginning of Peel Estate Wines. With no experience or formal
training, and at the age of 40, Will made a risky decision to stop farming lucerne at his Baldivis property and start a winery.
He's never looked back. 2009 marked his 30th vintage and his wines are of constant high quality with rich fruit intensity and just enough wood to add complexity and longevity. His love of wine has grown into a love for winemaking . "Nobody is really in the game to make a lot of money. You do it because you love it. It becomes a bit of an obsession." Winemaker Mark joined Peel Estate in the vintage of 2006. Mark has over 15 years wine industry experience in both Australia and Europe as well as formal wine qualifications. His propensity for quality raises the bar even higher. Stuart came to Peel Estate in 2008 after completing his degree in Viticulture. He brought with him great passion and interest for the wine industry. Before joining the Peel Estate team Stuart ran his own successful landscape company. |

The Cellar door opened to the public in 1981
and boasts a charming, rustic mezzanine level which overlooks the
winery. A visit on the right day during vintage will show wines being crushed, pressed and/or red wines fermenting on their skins. And because it is all open plan you will also experience all the lovely scents associated with vintage. Wine tasting is free (although large bus groups do incur a fee which is refundable upon purchase) and most of the range is tasted on a daily basis. Wines such as the Sparkling and Zinfandel are only available for tastings on week ends. There are various types of olives and other antipasto products available, as well as Peel Estate merchandise such as wine glasses, t-shirts and water jugs.
