Fans of the first Peel Baroque – the magnificent ’94 – will notice a change in style with the newly released ’98.

Simply put, it’s quite dry. The ‘94 was very much in the traditional Seppelt style with quite heavy liqueuring to give it a sumptuous, rich and sweet finish. The ’98 has the same depth of mature shiraz fruit, but it doesn’t finish with the same sweetness.

The major difference you’ll find is that the ’98 is much more a wine for food. Those who remember the ’98 Peel shiraz without the bubbles will recall that it was an elegant year, with great perfume and small red fruit characters. These carry through to the Baroque, but with the benefits of the yeast autolysis from the methode champenoise handling and some significant bottle age.

This is a very serious Australian sparkling red, but going with the Peel ethos of keeping the wines drier, rather than sugary.
