Deep garnet reds.

The bouquet improves dramatically with decanting, not an unusual characteristic of a wine made to develop over many years. It opens with lots of high esters and stewed fruits and soon transforms into classic Peel redcurrants and chalk.

The palate has a lovely satiny mouthfeel with great length. The fruit flavours are intense and then run into a chalky back palate with lots of fine oak tannins.

The wine is very powerfully-structured, built around high-class old-vine shiraz fruit and some well-charred wood.

2000 vintage also available

Anyone familiar with Peel shiraz would pick this bouquet a mile off and it fairly jumps out of the glass. There is a heady amalgam of small red-berry fruits and white pepper, beautifully seasoned new oak and powdery Peel chalk.

At almost 9 years of age there is still plenty of fruit and crunchy fresh acids on the back palate.  The cherry fruit sits behind the pepper and although it is not as rich and voluptuous as the ’96, it has the same flavour profiles.
